Artist's Comments

This is a scene from the opera Tales of Hoffmann - where the wicked scientist creates a beautiful doll and the poor sap, Hoffmann falls in love with her- with rather nasty results.

I tried to make the pen and ink look like a Victorian etching to give it the period feel

This is amazing and really well done, must have taken you awhile. I love the detail.
oddly i adore the expressions of the ladies present in the background. this hoffmann character looks quite sincere, while the other women seem to be scoffing or snidely remarking. the dresses are absolutely charming. you put so much smart detail in your works.

--like the ominous 'A HUR HUR HUR' you hear before you're beaten over the head with a donut.
Yes, that's exactly it. Hoffmann is the only one who doesn't realise he's chatting up a clockwork doll.

Cracked eggs, dead birds, scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
This is really good!
I like all the different expressions on the faces :D

But it's ok...they know me here :P
Oh, I love this opera. Beautiful, beautiful sketch. It looks very Victorian.

Thank you - the opera is lovely isn't it. i was only 13 when I was in it,but I remember it still. Since then I've sung the Nicklaus line in the Barcarolle, which was great fun.

Oh, how fun! The "Doll Song" is my favorite. It's sounds so silvery and cheerful when performed.

I've seen only fragments of the opera, but the short story it's based upon is one of my favourites.

Great drawing style:)
